This is our first time working with Reshad Ababulgu, a second-generation coffee farmer based in Agaro, Jimma. This coffee is juicy, clean and balanced with a profile of white florals, and juicy citrus.
In the cup
We taste intense florals reminding us of black tea, stone fruits like plums and peaches, and delicate citrus reminiscent of lemon tea. This coffee has a light body and a citric sparkling finish.
About The Producer
Reshad took over his family’s farm from his father 20 years ago, replanting the farm with newer varietals such as the 74110 in this lot. These newer varietals are more resistant to coffee berry disease and produce many different flavour profiles. Reshad focuses on quality with the goal of earning more money to support his family and the surrounding community.
Processing
Processing on the farm is done primarily by hand. After the cherries are picked and sorted, the outer husk is removed while a very thin layer of mucilage remains on the seed. The coffee is then dried without washing to preserve the natural sweetness that comes from the mucilage of the cherry.
Variety
74110 is a locally selected subvariety of Ethiopian Heirloom, developed in the 70s at the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) for resistance to the coffee berry disease. The prefix ‘74’ indicates that the selection and cataloguing occurred in 1974. The subvariety 74110 was selected from an original “mother tree” in the Bishari village in the Oromia region. The trees are short and compact, with small leaves and cherries.
