From ONIBUS
The Dukundekawa Agricultural Cooperative produces coffee in an environmentally friendly and human-friendly way. This is one of the first lots produced from the "Soil Project" that ONIBUS is working with them to make coffee production in Rwanda more sustainable.
Please enjoy this soil project lot, which was created together with the farmers, starting with soil preparation.
The Dukunde Kawa (Rwandan for "I love coffee") cooperative is located in Gakenke district in northern Rwanda.
The cooperative owns three washing stations, one of which is the Nkala washing station, where the coffee is refined.
At Dukunde Kawa, the profits from the coffee are not only returned to the cooperative members, but are also actively used for capital investment.
The cooperative has a dry mill (where threshing is done), a cupping lab for quality checks, and a cafe, and during my last visit, a kindergarten was under construction. Through such activities, they are always producing coffee of stable, high quality.
And DukundeKawa and ONIBUS are jointly conducting the "Soil Project." This soil-building project began in 2022 and aims to resolve the chronic fertilizer shortage, which is a challenge for coffee production in Rwanda, and to improve the soil environment to achieve sustainable coffee production in Rwanda. ONIBUS provides a wide range of support, from technical guidance to enable farmers to make and apply their own organic compost using coffee pulp, to financial support to continue the project, and securing sales channels.
This lot is one of the memorable first lots produced by the Soil Project. Cherries that have grown into trees fertilized with homemade organic compost are collected and separated into lots to distinguish them from others.
Since coffee quality is influenced by various factors such as climate and refining, it is difficult to measure the effect of compost alone, but we feel that the excellent quality of this Soil Project lot makes it worth continuing the Soil Project.
Please enjoy the Soil Project lot, which we worked on together with farmers from soil creation.
