From MEL
Jhoan Ricardo Dussan is a coffee producer from Planadas, Tolima, where he manages his farm La Campiña, named after the wild Tolimense countryside.
Passionate about showcasing the quality of his region, Jhoan focuses on producing microlots that take part in national and international competitions, opportunities he views as platforms to position his coffee and reach new markets.
On his farm, he works with both traditional and exotic varieties and experiments with a range of processing methods to highlight the diversity of flavour profiles found at La Campiña.
La Campiña Farm is located in Planadas, south of Tolima. This area is in the central Andes mountain range, and its high altitude, large temperature differences between day and night, frequent fog, and reduced direct sunlight result in slow cherries ripening and exceptionally clear acidity. In addition, the area is rich in volcanic soil, which gives the wine a mineral feel and a rich, full-bodied flavor. While distribution in Planadas was previously limited due to security concerns, since 2015 its specialty reputation has skyrocketed, and Tolima has consistently produced lots that have won COE (Cup of Excellence) awards and scored highly in recent years. Like Ricardo, there are many small-scale farmers with 1-3 hectares of land, and with family-run businesses and a focus on high quality becoming the norm, the area is attracting attention as a renowned producer of high-quality micro-lots.
