FARM
The Lunar Coffee Washing Station was established in 2011 in the Rwenzori Mountains of Western Uganda. Located in Kirabaho, Kitswamba Sub-county, Kasese District, the station sources SL28 variety coffee directly from local farmers. Building on Long Miles Coffee’s decade of experience processing coffee in Burundi, the station processes its coffees using washed, honey, and natural methods. This particular coffee comes from Rubirizi Hill, where most of the coffee grown is SL28, with a small portion of SL14. The region’s rich red volcanic soil further enhances the quality and flavor of these coffees.
PROCESS
All cherries are picked at 18–24° Brix, then floated and hand-sorted to remove any visual defects. They are placed in Jacky Bins and fermented for 60 hours, with the pH carefully maintained between 3.8 and 4.5. After fermentation, the coffee is dried for 10–15 days, and during the hottest hours of the day, it is covered to prevent rapid drying or heat shock.
