Perched at an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level, Bochesa an alpine enclave in the highlands of Arbegona. Established in 2014 and named for the nearby kebele of Bochesa, the station draws its name from the local founder who first gave identity to this community. The landscape here is etched by the Machisho River, a vital waterway that nourishes both the land and the cultural memory of Bochesa.
The Story
We’ve loved coffees from Bensa for almost a decade. Since our first forays into Shantawene and the Bombe mountain range, we’ve built key partnerships that have continually deepened our appreciation for this region. Without question, Bensa remains one of the most competitive and sought-after areas in Ethiopia, known for its remarkable quality and reputation, thanks to the soaring elevations and distinct microclimates scattered throughout the highlands. Following a major shift in our sourcing relationships in 2023, we’ve focused on cultivating direct connections within Bensa, one of the most meaningful being with Daye Bensa. In both December and March, we traveled to experience the harvest firsthand and to taste through the extensive range of coffees on offer. During these visits, we honed in on several standout producers, one of which is the Bocha (or Bochesa) station.
This is our first year working with coffee from the community of Bochesa. Like many lots in Ethiopia, this coffee was produced through the traditional model, where smallholder producers deliver ripe cherries to a centralized washing station for processing. Around 600 farmers contribute to this lot, most cultivating on small plots that sometimes amount to just a handful of trees in their backyards. Arbegona continues to be one of our favorite regions in the coffee-producing world, and we’re eager to keep exploring its potential in the years to come.
Perched at an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level, Bochesa is an alpine enclave nestled in the highlands of Arbegona. Established in 2014 and named after the nearby kebele, the station traces its name back to the local founder who first helped define this community’s identity. The surrounding landscape is carved by the Machisho River, a vital waterway that sustains both the land and the people who rely on it. Today, Boreta works in close partnership with a few hundred smallholder producers, many of whom cultivate coffee within forested gardens teeming with native biodiversity. The combination of elevation, climate, and stewardship creates an extraordinary environment for producing expressive coffees, and we hope to be a key partner for these coffees for years to come.
