The Gititu Coffee Factory, established in 1957, is one of the oldest and most esteemed washing stations in Kiambu County, located in Kenya’s central highlands. Originally a small, community-run wet mill, Gititu served pioneering Kikuyu farmers reclaiming their lands post-colonial rule. The name “Gititu,” meaning “small hill” in Kikuyu, reflects the rolling terrain and fertile volcanic soils that have supported coffee cultivation for decades. Now operating under the Gititu Farmers Cooperative Society, the factory represents over 2,500 smallholders, many being second- and third-generation producers. Farms range from 1,650 to 1,850 masl, benefiting from a microclimate moderated by the Aberdare range. Farmers grow SL28 and SL34 varieties, alongside Ruiru 11 and Batian, intercropped with macadamia and banana trees. Cherries are delivered ripe to the factory, undergoing Kenya’s hallmark fully washed process. Gititu’s reputation for quality is reflected in its consistent 85+ scores and top placements at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange. This legacy of resilience and collective ambition ensures that Gititu continues to uphold Kiambu’s storied coffee heritage, celebrated for its vivid acidity and sought after by specialty buyers worldwide.
