From HATCH
San Isidro Labrador project is a family run business. Johel Monge has been constantly producing incredible coffees that frequently rank highly in the Cup of Excellence, several of which have won first place. Johel won first place in the 2023 COE with a honey geisha.
From Selva Coffee:
“Joel and his son Mathias, who was studying mechanical engineering at the time, started to plant thousands of Geisha and Typica plants on their farms in Copey and Quebradillas de Dota in 2012. As they were planting, growing, and caring for the farm they came to the realization that it doesn’t really make sense to sell the fruit - they would have to process it themselves. The production of these varieties are very low, prices for the fruit are lower as well, and when selling fruit it’s possible for quality and traceability to get lost. In the meantime, Mathias saw many families in the community prospering by processing the fruit at their own wet mills. So, in their first real harvest for 2014/2015 of the newly planted coffees they established Hacienda San Isidro Labrador.”
