Hacienda El Obraje is a testament to the rewards of agricultural risk-taking. Located in the Tangua municipality of Nariño, Colombia, the farm sits at a staggering altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level—an elevation once thought unsuitable for coffee cultivation in the region. The estate was originally a wheat farm before transitioning to fruit orchards, but it was the shift to coffee that truly defined its legacy.
The terroir here is distinct and challenging. The soil is rocky and volcanic, rich in minerals that feed the trees, while the climate fluctuates drastically between hot days and near-freezing nights. These temperature shifts slow the maturation of the coffee cherries, resulting in beans with incredible density and complex sugar development. Of the 100-hectare property, only a quarter is dedicated to coffee, with the remainder preserved as a natural forest reserve to protect the area's unique microclimate and biodiversity.
This lot is a washed Geisha, a varietal that Pablo introduced to the farm in 2011 using seeds originally sourced from Panama. The trees are planted with wide spacing to accommodate their broad branches, ensuring each cherry receives optimal sunlight. The processing of this coffee is meticulously clean to highlight the delicate floral characteristics inherent to the Geisha variety.
