Where most coffee in Ethiopia comes from smallholders growing coffee as a portion of their mixed crop and delivering it to a mill to be processed typically with all the other coffee delivered on a given day, Alemayehu has a dedicated farm about 10 hectares in size. Because of this larger scope of production, Alemayehu set out to take out an export license of his own when the laws changed in Ethiopia, meaning he did not have to sell his cherry to a mill to get lost in the proverbial sauce, but rather he could produce his own coffee and sell it under his own name with traceability we’re just starting to get from coffee’s birthplace.
